Popular Woodworking Plans

Would you like to start learning the woodworking craft? Woodworking can be a very relaxing and rewarding hobby that leaves you with a feeling of satisfaction when you complete your project. It can also leave you frustrated if you don’t know where to begin!

First things first! You need to have an idea of what it is you want to build or create. If you are a true beginner you need to start small and then build on your success and experience. True craftsmen learn their trade over time and they learn from their mistakes. You will too. I suggest you start with a small woodworking project like a bird house, simple table or jewelry box. When that’s complete you will have a set of tools and a completed project, (completed being the key word)! You will also have a sense of accomplishment!

Now that you have a general idea of what you want to build you need to have a plan. The plans should be complete and tell you exactly what tools and materials are needed to finish your woodworking project. There are several places to get woodworking plans: Books, Magazines and the Internet.

You can always subscribe to a woodworking magazine if you want to try another alternative. An excellent publication is Fine Woodworking Magazine and it is available through Barnes and Noble at a discount. Magazines and books are great sources for woodworking plans, but you may have to buy a lot of magazines or books before you find the right project you.

While all of the woodworking plan magazines, books and internet links that I list here are excellent, the largest single source of available woodworking project plans can be found on TedsWoodworking.com. The plans are not free but they are available to download and it makes finding a woodworking project plan fast and easy. To go to Ted’s Woodworking .com, click here.

However, If you prefer books, here are a few suggestions:

The Right Woodworking Plans Make Woodworking Projects Easy

Building anything can be intimidating at first. Experienced woodworkers know the key to success is a good plan. A good woodworking plan is kind of like having a good road map before beginning a journey. Whether you’re building a woodworking project or taking a trip, if you have a bad plan you’re going to get lost!

Before you begin your search for a plan, think about what you might like to build. To generate some ideas, look around at your surroundings.  Go visit some furniture stores (and grab their catalogs on the way out).  Browse through some woodworking or architectural magazines. You will be amazed at what may spark your interest to try woodworking. Or, you may already know exactly what you want to build or need to build and want to get right to it.

What your woodworking plan needs to contain for it to be a success:

  • Blueprints with detailed assembly instructions
  • Materials lists must be thorough and itemized
  • Woodworking tools required for project completion
  • Finishing options
  • Safety tips

Now that you have some ideas in mind of the woodworking project you want to build and what a quality woodworking plan needs to contain, it’s time to find the woodworking project plan that is right for you.

Finding great woodworking project plans doesn’t have to be a chore if you know where to look! There are three basic places to find woodworking plans: woodworking magazines, books of woodworking plans found at the library and at home improvement stores, and online on the internet. The internet has dozens of sites and clubs for woodworking that offer woodworking plans. Review the plans carefully and realize that you get what you pay for. Most “free” plans are mere diagrams with little else to offer. Some woodworking plan offerings found on the web cost a bit more money but are extremely detailed and provide step by step directions. Not sure about you, but I don’t like to be left guessing. I’d rather buy a good plan that will ensure my success than try to go the cheap route and not finish what I started out to do.  Again, your journey will only go as smoothly as the plan laid out before you begin.

If you do get a woodworking project plan and have questions about it, I suggest you take it with you to your local home improvement store and ask one of the workers there for their help. Don’t be shy. The people working in these stores usually have experience in the building industry and are more than happy to share their experience with you and help you get the right materials you need for your project.

Simple Woodworking Projects for Kids

Wood Projects For KidsWood projects can keep kids busy and engaged while learning a new hobby. We discuss the 3 things you need to consider when picking out simple woodworking projects for kids.

Working with wood is really fun for kids but it also has some other benefits that parents might not normally consider. For example, when working on a wood project, kids get in touch with their creative side. Kids also use some of the skills they learn in school like basic math, geometry and logical order (depending on how simple or complicated the project is).

When picking out a woodworking project for your child, consider the following: How much time are you going to spend helping the child complete the project? If the child is young or the supervising adult doesn’t have a lot of time to help build the project, then choose a simple woodworking project plan, or better yet, choose a pre-cut wooden dollhouse kit. Several companies make excellent dollhouse kits that require simple assembly with glue. Once the dollhouse is assembled your child can show off their artistic side by deciding what color to paint the interior or exterior. Dollhouses are some of the easiest wood projects kids can build.

Note: Children require adult supervision when working with any type of glue or tools and should never be left unsupervised.

If you and your kids plan on making this adventure a bonding experience, pick a simple woodworking project that’s still fun, but slightly more challenging. Some examples of wood projects that your kids might want to try are: a toy box, a music box, a jewelry box, a classic pony rocker, a rocking horse, a flag case, a bird house, a wagon or a chessboard to name a few. There are excellent plans available and some of the woodworking hardware kits even include free woodworking plans.

Some larger woodworking projects for kids to also consider building are: bunk beds, a cradle, or a backyard playhouse. The backyard playhouse is my personal favorite because it will take a little time to build, the kids will help build it, and then they will spend hours and hours enjoying it while the weather is nice outside. For girls (or for fathers / grandfathers to build and give as a gift to his daughter / granddaughter) my favorites are the dollhouse kits. If you’re a father or grandfather and you build one of the wooden dollhouse kits with your daughter or granddaughter, I assure you she will treasure it always. Boys may find a mail truck bank kit or a buckboard wagon kit fun to build from wood.

So remember, when picking simple woodworking projects for kids; keep your time commitment to helping them complete the project in mind, keep the wood project related to something the child finds interesting, and last but not least, keep it fun.

Woodwork Crafts – The Beginners Guide To Woodworking

Woodworking is one hobby that can also be a rewarding profession if you love to work with your hands and build beautiful pieces of furniture from wood. When you learn the woodworking crafts and become a fine woodworking craftsman, you will be able to build all kinds of furniture, (table, beds, and chairs), with ease. You can then sell your completed woodworking projects and make a handsome profit.

It takes time to become skilled in the craft of woodworking. The nice thing about working up to that expert craftsman level is you will be able to build some really nice furniture for you and your family to enjoy. Imagine building a custom coffee table or grandfather clock and having it sit in your living room. It will be a topic of conversation whenever you have friends come over to visit. They will ask: How did you make it? Where did you get the woodworking plans? How long did it take to complete the project? What kind of wood did you use? What kind of tools did you use? How on earth did you make such a beautiful piece of furniture? As you discuss your work, a sense of pride will come over you and don’t be surprised if your friends ask you to make one for them too!

If you are thinking you are too old or too young for woodworking, think again! You are never too old or too young for such a fun hobby and it’s perfect for beginners!

Where to Begin in Woodworking?

Start with an idea in mind of what you want to build and then get a really good woodworking project plan that is geared toward beginners. There are several small woodworking projects for beginners available for purchase from online woodworking retailers. A few woodworking plan suggestions to get you thinking are: a jewelry box, a music box, a clock, a bird house, a chessboard or checkerboard, a rocking horse for a child just to name a few. Of course you can start out with as grand a woodworking plan as you choose. However, the chances are if you start out with a small woodworking project at first, you will have a better chance of completing the project.

Your woodworking project plan should include some lists! Lists of: woodworking hardware, the amount and type of wood required, and the required hand tools and power tools to complete the project. Note: A word of caution about buying woodworking tools. Only buy what you need to complete your immediate or upcoming project. This is important especially if you are a beginner and just starting out. Tools are not cheap. The beginner needs good woodworking tools, but you can easily break the bank buying lot of tools you may not use all that often. When you do buy tools, buy quality. Do a little research and compare products. Buy the best that you can afford at the time.

Here is my Beginners List of Woodworking Hand Tools:

A claw hammer, wood chisel set, a hand saw, a miter box with a saw (for cutting angles), a coping saw, finish punches, flat and straight tip screwdrivers, a rubber mallet (for tapping pieces together while not damaging the wood), woodworking clamps, a wood vise, a bench plane, a rasp, a tape measure, a 12” steel rule, a 6” steel square, and don’t forget the wood glue and a brush to spread the wood glue! Of course you will need a dry place to work and may need a pair of saw horses to work on.

Here is my Beginners List of Woodworking Power Tools:

Circular saw, a jig saw, a table saw, a belt sander (to remove larger amounts of material and level out larger surfaces), an orbital finish sander, a 3/8” electric drill, a 12v or 18v cordless drill.

Here is my Beginners List of Woodworking Safety Equipment:

Safety glasses, clear safety goggles, dust masks, face shield, hearing protectors, Nitrile disposable gloves

We could go on and on with listing more woodworking hand tools and more woodworking power tools here, but the idea is to buy the essential hand and power tools that beginners will need. You can always add to your toolbox as you gain experience!

Guidance for Beginner Woodworking Craftsmen:

You now have a great new hobby in woodworking, you have purchased your woodworking project plan and you’re really excited to start using your new woodworking tools, but how? Your woodworking project plan should provide you step by step directions and techniques to complete your project. But if you are unsure about what to do there is help available! There are several places that beginning woodworkers can learn about the woodworking craft. First, subscribe to one of the several woodworking magazines available. Every month the writers in woodworking magazines do a story on how to improve your woodworking craft. Whether it is showing you how to apply a finish to a completed project, or how to make a mortise and tenon joint, something new can be learned every month. Next, is buying instructional DVD’s like the ones created by Fine Woodworking Magazine. Instructional Woodworking DVD’s cover topics such as: mastering your table saw, how to use a router, how to turn wood projects, turning wooden bowls, and wood finishing basics. As you can see, there are many educational resources available for the Beginning Woodworker to learn the Woodworking Craft.

The Beginners Guide To Buying Used Woodworking Tools

used woodworking tools

Shop now for used and reconditioned woodworking tools

Whether you’re an experienced woodworking craftsman or a total rookie you can save money by purchasing used woodworking tools instead of new tools. Used woodworking tools still have plenty of useful life left in them and usually are being sold by someone who is looking to find a good home for them.

Where to buy used woodworking tools

When looking for used woodworking tools, several sources come to mind.

The first is garage sales and estate sales. Many people buy tools with great intentions but after a few years of the tools collecting dust in the garage or cellar, the original owner is ready to part with them. That’s good news for you because you just know that they have barely been used and the seller needs the cash. The next place I would look is in the local classified ads and the local thrift paper or penny saver newspaper. Weekend flea markets are another good place to find used tools, and lastly I would look on eBay.

When buying woodworking tools, be sure to inspect them closely before parting with your money. Yes, there will be some wear on them, but they should not be worn out. Hammer handles should be tight in the hammer-head. Saws should be still sharp, not bent or missing teeth. Hand planes should have blades without any nicks or gouges. Chisels should not have any deep gouges in the cutting edge (although chisels are fairly easy to get sharpened). Rulers should have legible markings. If you are buying power tools, be sure to ask the owner to plug them in and demonstrate that they actually work. Don’t forget your most important tool and that is your Eye Safety Glasses or goggles!

When buying tools, be sure to buy the tools you need to complete your project. Your woodworking project plans should be telling you what tools and materials you need to complete the project. Be sure you have the right tools for the job. If you cannot find the tools you need used, then by all means, go to your local home improvement store and buy new. While you are there, ask the floor person if they have a bargain bin or a section where returned tools are on clearance. In this slow economy it’s not unusual for people to by a tool for a home improvement job and then return it when they are done using it. You might pick up a good used power tool like a circular saw just because someone decided to return it to the store.  By the way, if you have any doubts about what tools you need for your woodworking project, your local home improvement store is a great place to get advice from the pros who are happy to help you.

We also have a large selection of used woodworking tools that have been reconditioned to be as good as new. Many of these reconditioned tools are sold at lower prices. Please check out our used woodworking tools for sale by clicking here.
